But team owners in recent years have turned to real estate development to bring in extra cash and drive up the asset values of their franchises. “It makes perfect sense for a team owner to play real estate,” said Propheter. “That means that team owners do have a lot of leverage,” he said. “Stadium subsidies transfer wealth from the general tax base to billionaire team owners, millionaire players, and the wealthy cohort of fans” who regularly attend games. “Generally speaking, the people who come off well are the team owners and the developers,” Zimbalist said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — SoFi Stadium will begin work Monday on renovations to increase the size of its playing field area in preparation for hosting eight matches during the 2026 World Cup. “It's really just changing pre-cast concrete in the corners of the stadium to a more retractable system,” Demoff said Sunday. SoFi also will have a temporary grass field for the World Cup in place of its usual artificial turf. The changes that we will make to the stadium were always contemplated for the World Cup. Although the Los Angeles-area World Cup organizers didn't get the final, only AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host more total matches than SoFi.

The San Fernando Valley, once an endless ramble of orange groves in Southern California that evolved into the porn capital of the world in the 1970s and later gave way to big-box retailers and strip malls, will now become the home of the 2021 season’s Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams. In a $650 million land deal by the team’s owner, Stan Kroenke, Rams executives laid out their vision last week for revitalizing nearly 100 acres in the valley’s Woodland Hills neighborhood into a sports-centric, live-work-play development, including a practice facility and team headquarters. The deal includes two properties owned by Westfield, a shopping center developer that is pulling out of the U.S. market, as well as an abandoned 13-story building and parking lot that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield owned. After the coronavirus pandemic hastened the embrace of online retail and remote work, blighted malls and office buildings have closed their doors. The vacant properties and their adjoining parking lots now offer a chance to redevelop valuable square footage in neighborhoods like Woodland Hills.

"It's got to be," smiled Jokic, when asked if this was the golden era for Serbian athletes. Jokic was the clear choice to win the Bill Russell Trophy as the NBA Finals MVP after the Serbian big man averaged 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists. The 41st pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Jokic becomes the lowest-drafted player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP and the first player drafted outside of the top 15 to win the award.

The men’s team sits atop the English Premier League, with a manager full of ideas and a fearless new generation breaking through into the first team. Arteta’s Arsenal now leads Manchester City in the Premier League – a team that is touted for greatness – and shows very little signs of slowing down. He took his shirt off, swore at the Arsenal fans and stormed down the tunnel in what looked to be his last act as a player for the club. The realistic expectation, then, is not necessarily to win the Premier League title but to cement itself back in the Champions League. The Premier League will pause for over a month as many of Arsenal’s players will travel to the Gulf nation to join their respective teams.
When Rams owner Stan Kroenke uprooted his team from St. Louis to Los Angeles, he built his team a palatial $5 billion new home, where it triumphed in the Super Bowl last season. But the Rams’ move there also sparked litigation from St. Louis authorities, alleging that leaving the area violated the NFL’s relocation policies. As the league lost repeated rulings in the case, ultimately leading to a $790 million settlement, tensions flared between Kroenke and his fellow owners over who would pick up the sizable tab.
